Lap band removal surgery is performed to safely remove a previously placed gastric band, often to address complications, discomfort, or inadequate weight loss. At BMI Specialist Clinic, Dr Andrew Kiyingi and his team take a tailored, patient-first approach—focusing on restoring comfort, improving health, and planning the next stage of your weight loss journey.
What Is Lap Band Removal Surgery?
Lap band removal surgery involves the complete removal of an adjustable gastric band that was previously placed around the upper portion of the stomach.
From a technical perspective, the band, connecting tubing, and access port are carefully dissected and removed. Any scar tissue that has formed around the band is also released to restore the stomach to a more natural shape and function.
While the anatomy of the stomach is largely preserved after removal, long-term changes caused by the band—such as stretching of the oesophagus or stomach pouch—may still need to be assessed and managed.
In many cases, band removal is the first step in a broader treatment plan, which may include revision to another procedure such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.
How Does Lap Band Removal Surgery Work?
The procedure focuses on reversing the mechanical restriction created by the band and relieving associated symptoms.
By removing the band, normal passage of food is restored, which can resolve issues such as reflux, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or chronic discomfort.
Unlike primary weight loss procedures, lap band removal on its own does not promote weight loss. In fact, without further treatment, patients may regain weight after removal.
For this reason, the procedure is often combined with or followed by a structured plan—either surgical or non-surgical—to support ongoing weight management.
What to Expect From My Lap Band Removal Journey
This is a carefully managed and individualised process.
It begins with a comprehensive consultation, where we assess your current symptoms, medical history, and the condition of the band. Imaging or endoscopy may be required to fully understand the situation.
The procedure is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and typically takes between 45–90 minutes. Most patients stay in hospital for 1 night, although some may go home the same day depending on their recovery.
Recovery is generally quicker than primary bariatric surgery. Most patients return to normal activities within 1–2 weeks.
If a revision procedure is being considered, this may be performed at the same time (one-stage) or as a separate surgery (two-stage), depending on clinical factors and safety considerations.
Ongoing follow-up ensures symptoms are resolved and a clear plan is in place moving forward.
How Does Lap Band Removal Surgery Change Your Life?
For many patients, the most immediate impact is relief.
Symptoms such as reflux, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, and persistent discomfort often improve significantly once the band is removed. Eating becomes more natural and less restrictive.
However, it is important to understand that lap band removal alone is not a weight loss solution.
Without a follow-up strategy, weight regain is common. This is why we work closely with you to determine the most appropriate next step—whether that involves revision surgery or a structured non-surgical programme.
The goal is not just removal, but a reset—creating a safer, more effective pathway forward.
What Are the Risks and Benefits?
Lap band removal surgery is a routine procedure with a strong safety profile when performed by an experienced surgeon.
The benefits include relief from band-related complications, improved comfort, and the opportunity to transition to a more effective long-term weight management strategy.
As with any surgery, there are risks. These include (but are not limited to):
- Bleeding (approximately 1–2%)
• Infection
• Injury to the stomach or surrounding structures (rare)
• Conversion to open surgery (rare)
• Anaesthetic risks
In cases where significant scarring or complications exist, the procedure may be more complex.
Our team will guide you through a clear understanding of your individual risk profile and the best path forward.
Lap band removal is not the end of your journey—it is often the beginning of a more effective and sustainable approach to weight loss.
