ERCP is a specialised, minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, pancreas, and gallbladder. At BMI Specialist Clinic, Dr Andrew Kiyingi and his team provide a precise, patient-focused approach—aimed at resolving blockages, relieving symptoms, and restoring normal function.
What Is ERCP?
ERCP stands for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography.
It combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to access and treat problems within the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts.
From a technical perspective, a flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth, down the oesophagus, and into the stomach and small intestine. A fine instrument is then used to access the bile duct, where contrast dye is injected to allow detailed imaging.
This enables the identification and treatment of issues such as gallstones in the bile duct, strictures (narrowing), blockages, or leaks.
Importantly, ERCP is both a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure—meaning problems can often be treated at the same time they are identified.
How Does ERCP Work?
The procedure works by directly accessing the bile and pancreatic ducts without the need for traditional surgery.
Once the ducts are visualised, a range of treatments can be performed. These may include removing gallstones, placing stents to relieve blockages, or widening narrowed areas.
By restoring the normal flow of bile or pancreatic fluid, ERCP helps relieve symptoms such as pain, jaundice, and infection.
Unlike open or laparoscopic surgery, ERCP is performed internally via the endoscope, which reduces recovery time and avoids external incisions.
What to Expect From My ERCP Journey
This is a carefully planned and controlled procedure.
It begins with a consultation and diagnostic work-up, which may include blood tests and imaging such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI scans.
The procedure is typically performed under sedation or light anaesthesia and usually takes between 30–90 minutes, depending on complexity.
Most patients are observed for several hours after the procedure and may go home the same day, although some cases require an overnight stay for monitoring.
You may experience mild throat discomfort or bloating after the procedure, which usually resolves quickly.
Follow-up is arranged to review results and ensure the underlying issue has been effectively treated.
How Does ERCP Change Your Life?
For many patients, ERCP provides rapid and effective relief from symptoms caused by blockages or dysfunction in the bile ducts or pancreas.
Conditions such as jaundice, abdominal pain, or recurrent infections can often be resolved without the need for more invasive surgery.
By addressing the underlying issue directly, ERCP helps restore normal digestive function and prevents more serious complications.
The overall outcome is improved comfort, stability, and a faster return to normal daily life.
What Are the Risks and Benefits?
ERCP is a highly effective procedure with significant benefits, particularly as it can both diagnose and treat conditions in a single session.
The benefits include relief of obstruction, treatment of ductal conditions, and avoidance of more invasive surgery in many cases.
As with any medical procedure, there are risks. These include (but are not limited to):
- Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, approximately 3–5%)
• Bleeding
• Infection (cholangitis)
• Perforation of the digestive tract (rare)
• Reactions to sedation
Most complications are uncommon, and the procedure is considered safe when performed by experienced specialists.
Our team will guide you through a clear understanding of your condition, the procedure, and what to expect—ensuring you are fully informed at every stage.
